What Does GSM Mean?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It measures the weight (and by extension, the thickness and density) of a knit or woven fabric. Suppliers and buyers use GSM as the standard reference point when specifying fabric for t-shirts, polos, hoodies, and other garments, because it directly affects hand-feel, drape, durability, and cost.
A higher GSM fabric is heavier and denser (think heavyweight streetwear tees or fleece hoodies), while a lower GSM fabric is lighter and more breathable, suited to summer wear or performance layers.

How to Choose GSM for Your Project
- Climate & season: lighter GSM (170-190) for summer and promotional wear, heavier GSM (250+) for premium or cold-weather garments.
- Positioning: mass-market retail typically runs 170-220 GSM; boutique and streetwear brands often specify 220-300+ GSM for a more substantial hand-feel.
- Garment type: hoodies and sweatshirts use French Terry or fleece in the 300-450 GSM range; t-shirts and polos are typically 170-250 GSM.
- Print/embroidery decoration: heavier GSM fabrics generally hold screen printing and embroidery stitching better without show-through or puckering.
